Burj Khalifa

Architectural Features

The tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa Tower was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), which also designed the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in Chicago and the One World Trade Center in New York City. Utilizing Willis Tower’s bundled tube design, the tower contains only half as much iron as the previously designed structure, the Empire State Building, due to its piping system. In its initial planning, the Burj Khalifa was intended to be a fully inhabited place.

Burj Khalifa’s architecture features a three-lobed footprint, an abstraction of the hymenocallis flower. Burj Khalifa consists of three elements arranged around a central core. The modular, Y-shaped structure creates setbacks along each of its three wings. This provides a naturally balanced configuration for the tower and provides good floor plates for the residence. The cross section of the tower is progressively reduced as the twenty-six spiral levels spiral into the sky. The central core emerges at the apex and ends in a chiseled spike. A Y-shaped floor plan maximizes views of the Persian Gulf. Viewed from the floor or from the air, the Burj Khalifa evokes the onion domes common in Islamic architecture. The structural system used for the Burj Khalifa was built using high performance concrete masonry. Each wing supports the other via a hexagonal central core. The central core has a higher resistance to torsional stiffness. There are corridor walls extending from the central core of the building to the end of the wing. Eventually these walls were thickened with hammer walls. These walls act as webs and flanges of the beams, resisting wind shears and moments. The connection between the perimeter columns connected to the mechanical floors and the mechanical floors is provided by buttress walls. This helps to resist higher wind loads laterally. The pier depth is three stories high and there is a periodic encounter of the pier system along the height of the tower.

Burj Khalifa Floor Features

Burj Khalifa is the building with the highest occupancy of all buildings, with a total of 163 floors and 154 floors. The Burj Khalida houses the Armani Hotel Dubai from the concourse level to level 8 and levels 38 and 39. Floors 9 through 16 house only the luxurious one- and two-bedroom Armani Residences.

Floors 45 to 108 are private ultra-luxury residences. Corporate Suites occupy most of the floors, apart from the 122nd floor, which houses the At.mosphere, and the 124th floor, which is the tower’s public observatory, At the Top, Burj Khalifa. The tower’s 43 is divided into sections with state-of-the-art fitness facilities, including private Sky Lobbies on floors 76 and 123, and hot tubs on floors 43 and 76.
